Although Ohio State won the first-ever iteration of the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff, DawgCentral's Graham Coffey was not thrilled about how it transpired.
Despite not winning the Big Ten, Ohio State secured four straight wins to reach its first title game in a decade, defeating Notre Dame 34-23.
Coffey voiced his frustrations on ' X' (formerly Twitter), writing that Ohio State wasn't punished harshly enough for its Week 14 loss to Michigan.
"Michigans win over Ohio State should have gone down as one of the most painful losses in rivalry week history," Coffey wrote.
"A $20 million roster wasted.
A once-promising coaching tenure blown up on the launch pad.
Instead, it doesnt matter at all.
Congrats to everyone who ruined the best regular season in sport." Coffey was far from done, slightly returning his initial stance before taking a step further.
"This wasnt intended as an anti-OSU tweet at all," Coffey added.
"Its just illustrating how the new format devalued the season.
I mean, John Cooper wouldve been a legend in this era because The Game doesnt matter at all.
In truth, losing it and avoiding the B1G title game was great for OSU." After diving deeper into other NIL valuations, including the Texas Longhorns, he credited the Buckeyes for an impressive season.
Before doing so, however, he threw a verbal jab at those who view the Michigan flag-planting incident negatively.
"I dont know if OSUs talent brings home some ROI without the core of seniors who just became genuinely undone by the loss to Michigan and the flag-planting," Coffey wrote.
They became determined to make a stand.
A roster of pure mercenaries probably doesnt rally together in the same ways.
None of its possible without considerable spending on guys like Downs, Judkins, and Howard, but its also probably not possible without them assimilating into the culture and embracing some of the burdens of it." Coffey gave credit where credit is due toward Jack Sawyer, who undoubtedly was the unsung defensive hero.
"A four-year guy like Jack Sawyer makes all of that happen," Coffey wrote.
"As an outsider, he goes down as one of the greatest Buckeyes ever.
Why? Because he cared, and caring is in short supply these days in college sports.
Guys who care almost always beat guys who dont.
Guys who care and can make others feel that enough to work harder? They are the new diamonds." Lastly, though, he gave his final thoughts on the coaching efforts of Ryan Day but ultimately concluded the criticism Day received at points during the season was "fair." Nevertheless, the Buckeyes are going to have their doubters.
They won.
It's what the new system allows for and continues to do so..
